the freckles on that face were constellations to her mind. but the face was starting to fade from her memory. maybe he was just a hallucination. maybe her bones weren't white.

She remembered blue. Oceans flowing through and behind translucent eyelids. In the dead of night she could hear the waves crash, and the sound never was beautiful or enchanting again. Just became the soundtrack of sleepless and loveless nights.

there was a gap in the thought process that allowed her to drift off and dream. the possibility of the pummeling of water being a major distraction was more than fathomable. he'd loved that sound. of course, that made it like hell to her. stopping her from ever enjoying it the way she used to. the way she wanted to.

she wondered if she could sink into the blackness that was behind her eyes and just slip away, fall into nothing and never be seen or heard again. no sounds to tug heart strings, or to beacon oceans to gush down sharpened cheekbones. he'd call her stupid for even thinking this. but she was far beyond the point of listening to his gravel voice.

it was all fire. every breath was a scorch to her nasal passage, every blink a scar to her eyes. all sounds were intense surges of heat to her ear drums; the beating a series of fierce taps to her brain. all of it burned. touching her face to the ocean's surface, she thought of the abyss in which she always dreamed of disappearing into. the safe haven of empty. something in the water made her feel as though she was already there. all she knows is she was taught her whole life, how to love.

but never once told how to stop.
